Example

12,000 BTU/h ÷ 500 ft² = 24 BTU/h per ft². That ratio describes this capacity and area combination only. It does not establish that 24 is appropriate for a different room or climate.

How to interpret the result

Two spaces with the same area can have very different loads because of ceiling height, outdoor design conditions, insulation, glazing, orientation, occupancy, lighting, equipment, outdoor air, and humidity. Compare like-for-like data only, then perform a documented load review for final decisions.

Does this tell me what size system to buy?

No. It reports a ratio. Actual loads depend on construction, climate, solar gain, occupancy, ventilation, humidity, and equipment performance.

Can I use gross building area?

Use the area that the stated capacity actually serves, and record the area definition. Mixing conditioned and unconditioned areas makes the ratio misleading.

Is BTU/h per square foot the same as a load calculation?

No. A load calculation evaluates the factors causing heat gain or loss; this is only a division of two known inputs.
