CFM measures volume flow

CFM means cubic feet per minute. It is a volume-flow rate, not a cooling capacity, fan pressure, or air-quality rating. In HVAC work, a CFM value can refer to supply air, return air, exhaust air, outdoor ventilation air, or recirculated air; those flows have different purposes and are not interchangeable.

CFM and room volume

When room volume is known, CFM can be expressed as air changes per hour (ACH): ACH = CFM × 60 ÷ room volume in ft³. Rearranging gives CFM = room volume × ACH ÷ 60. This is a unit relationship, not a universal airflow recommendation.

Worked example

A room that is 20 ft by 15 ft with an 8 ft ceiling has 2,400 ft³ of volume. At a chosen 6 ACH, the equivalent airflow is 2,400 × 6 ÷ 60 = 240 CFM. Whether 6 ACH is appropriate depends on the room type, use, ventilation requirements, equipment, and applicable code.

Use the correct next tool

Use CFM for a stated airflow problem, ACH to compare a flow with room volume, and a load calculation when the objective is heating or cooling capacity. Once an airflow is established, check duct area, velocity, and pressure loss instead of selecting duct size from CFM alone.

Is more CFM always better?

No. Excessive airflow can create noise, drafts, pressure issues, or poor dehumidification in some applications. The target depends on the actual design objective.

Can I convert CFM to m³/h?

Yes. Multiply CFM by 1.69901082 to obtain m³/h. It is the same volume-flow rate expressed in metric units.
