CFM vs air changes per hour (ACH)
CFM identifies a volume flow. ACH expresses that same flow as room-volume equivalents per hour, so it cannot be interpreted without the room dimensions and the air stream being measured.
Quick answer
Use CFM when the question is about a fan, duct, grille, supply, return, exhaust, or outdoor-air flow. Use ACH when the question is how that identified flow compares with one enclosed room’s volume. Neither measure alone selects equipment or proves a ventilation requirement.

The conversion formula
CFM = room volume (ft³) × ACH ÷ 60
For metric inputs, first use a consistent volume-flow and room-volume unit system. The relationship is still hourly airflow divided by room volume.
Worked room-volume example
A 20 ft by 15 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling has a volume of 2,400 ft³. If the identified flow is 240 CFM:
- Convert the minute flow to an hourly volume: 240 CFM × 60 = 14,400 ft³/h.
- Divide by the room volume: 14,400 ÷ 2,400 = 6 ACH.
If the same 240 CFM serves a 4,800 ft³ volume, it is 3 ACH. The flow did not change; its relationship to the room volume did.
Name the air stream before using the number
A CFM or ACH calculation needs a label. Supply air, return air, outdoor air, exhaust air, and recirculated air can have different purposes and may not be interchangeable. A nominal ACH calculation does not mean that all air is replaced, nor does it show how uniformly air mixes in a room.
Choose the measure that matches the decision
- Use a stated CFM to check airflow through a duct or to compare a fan’s identified operating flow.
- Use ACH to normalize an identified flow by a room volume and compare room-scale air movement.
- Use an applicable standard, code, or project design basis for any required outdoor-air or exhaust rate. Do not apply one generic ACH value to every occupancy.
- For heating or cooling decisions, start with a documented load, then review supply-air conditions and distribution rather than using ACH alone.
FAQ
Which should I use: CFM or ACH?
Use CFM for an identified air stream at equipment or a duct. Use ACH when you need to compare that flow with a known enclosed volume.
Does 6 ACH mean all room air is replaced six times?
No. It is a nominal flow-to-volume ratio. Actual mixing, short-circuiting, leakage, and the outdoor-air fraction can produce a different real-world result.
Can ACH size HVAC equipment?
No. Equipment capacity depends on a documented heating or cooling load and design conditions. ACH can be one airflow check, not a substitute for that process.
