What the ratio measures

CFM per square foot compares a stated volume flow with floor area. It can help normalize an airflow figure across similarly used spaces, but it omits ceiling height and does not identify whether the air is supply, return, exhaust, outdoor, or recirculated.

Formula

CFM/ft² = CFM ÷ floor area (ft²)

Worked example

A 1,200 ft² space with 600 CFM has 600 ÷ 1,200 = 0.50 CFM/ft². A second 1,200 ft² space with a 14 ft ceiling has much more volume than one with an 8 ft ceiling, even though the ratio is identical. Use volume and the purpose of the airflow before drawing a design conclusion.

Is CFM per square foot a code requirement?

Not by itself. The applicable requirement depends on occupancy, air stream, system, and local jurisdiction.

Can I use it to select an HVAC unit?

No. Equipment selection needs a documented load calculation and manufacturer performance data; the ratio is only a comparison metric.
